Man seriously injured in Mingo Junction bicycle crash

Updated: Wednesday, August 20 2014, 06:36 PM EDT
MINGO JUNCTION, Ohio -- McLister Avenue in Mingo Junction is a busy roadway with a lot of vehicle traffic, and not necessarily a lot of bicycle traffic.
But on Wednesday, a bicycle was the center of attention after ugly crash along the roadway. The accident took place around 3 p.m. Officials say a 54-year-old man was traveling at a high rate of speed – reportedly upwards of 40 mph -- on a bicycle when he lost control and flipped over the handlebars nearly 30 feet.
The man told police he believed he had hit a hole. However they couldn't find any evidence of that.
Officials said the man suffered facial and head injuries and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. As a result, was taken to Hills Elementary School where a medical helicopter was waiting. He was then flown to a Pittsburgh hospital.
Although the man’s injuries were serious, they appear to be not life-threatening.
"There's a couple of potholes (on the avenue),” said Captain Brandon Montgomery of the Mingo Junction Fire Department. “The city has been working to patch those. (The victim) did state he was traveling pretty fast, lost control and landed on the roadway."
The mayor and the city are working hard to repair any holes along the roadway, but in this instance, it doesn't appear as though a pothole would've been solely to blame. It appears as though this was just an accident.
