JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- Final but voter's decision in Jefferson County has produced a first for the county court system.
Michelle Garcia-Miller will make the transition from magistrate to judge on Jan. 1, and doing so will make her the first woman to serve on the bench in Jefferson County.
Even though she will be running unopposed in November, her work is just beginning and she feels a responsibility to those she's met along the way.
"Looking forward, I believe that taking the bench and assuming my position as Common Pleas Judge of Jefferson County is the highest achievement and honor and I'm very excited about that," Garcia-Miller said.
Receiving support from family members and friends, Garcia-Miller said she feels an added responsibility to serve the bench to the best of her ability for the citizens she met door-to-door while campaigning.
"The responsibility and duty that I have as a Common Pleas Judge reaches out to every citizen in this county and every person that comes before the bench in Jefferson County," she said.
Coupled with that heightened sense of accountability, she also assumes the bench as the first female judge in Jefferson County -- an opportunity that she relishes.
"I think that shows that this county is a progressive county and wants to move forward," Garcia-Miller said. "So I am taking this as an opportunity to be a good representative of our county."
Judge David Henderson will serve out the remainder of his term until his retirement becomes effective.
