JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – Numerous police departments in Jefferson County have been working together after a string of crimes occurred over the weekend.
Law enforcement was successful Monday morning, as they caught a suspect behind at least some the burglaries.
Taken into custody was the suspect involved with the three burglaries that occurred on Saturday – two in Harrison County and one in Jefferson County.
After that, even more crimes occurred in Jefferson County.
Investigators got their first look at the suspect Saturday morning via surveillance video from one of three burglaries -- the Country Store in Hopedale, Woods Food Center downtown, and the Marathon gas station in Bloomingdale.
The suspect involved with those burglaries stole a vehicle from the Steubenville Water Department. Surveillance at the burglaries caught the label on the vehicle.
These three burglaries were just a few of the many criminal acts occurring throughout Jefferson County.
Police had to band together to start searching for those involved with all of these crimes.
“Well (Sunday) night, law enforcement was blanketing the area all around the county looking for this individual -- Highway Patrol, Wintersville, Steubenville, Mingo, and Smithfield, thinking he may strike again,” Jefferson County Sherriff Fred Abdalla said.
The individual was getting ready to strike again around 5:50 Monday morning. A Jefferson County deputy spotted the Steubenville Water Department van at the Family Dollar on the 7th street.
“The individual was up at the door like he was ready to break in when Deputy Lackey hollered, ‘Sheriff’s Office!’ he took off running, jumped in the vehicle then fled. (He) then went up on Hiland Avenue where he flipped on his side and crashed. He got out and did a short foot pursuit and he was apprehended."
Jefferson County and Harrison county Sheriff Departments worked closely to catch this suspect.
"I can’t thank all the law agencies that were involved (Sunday) night,” Abdalla said. “We were literally blanketed all around the county, and that’s what you have to do before he hurts someone or someone shoots him.”
The suspect’s name has not been released, but the charges he is looking at are theft and possession of a stolen item.
Police believe this suspect may be involved with some of the other crimes that occurred over the weekend.
