STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- The Fort Steuben Bridge was blown up into the Ohio River in Feb. 12. Fortunately for many that had special memories of that bridge, a piece of it still lives on.
A pillar crafted into a one-of-kind observation deck now stands still stands above the Ohio River.
The pillar is the focal point because of the history of the Fort Steuben Bridge. But there is so much more to this project that took several months to complete.
There is a parking area that is completely overhauled. There is a pedestrian bridge and, after a short walk, you get a great view of the Ohio River.
None of this would be possible without some state and federal grants, totaling $200,000 and allowed the city to make this idea a reality.
"A lot of feedback is why is it taking so long?” City Engineer Mike Dolak said. “But when you're working through with a bunch of different agencies, there is a lot of process you have to work through and specifications relating to environmental work."
The bridge is about 99 percent complete. There are still some lunch-list items.
Dolak says the observation deck will get the finishing touches in June. He added that it is simply the start of the improvements at the Marina.
