JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- A couple's crime spree that involved a puppy and some bizarre circumstances ended at quadriplex along Main Street in Brilliant on Saturday.
That’s where police captured one of their suspects in the basement trying to steal copper.
That was suspect Michael Bell. His girlfriend is Jennifer Eddy.
They both face a number of charges, a majority of which stem from the first of their crimes.
Investigators say Eddy convinced a woman from Toronto who was selling a puppy to meet in Wells Township. When she did, Bell was there and asked for a ride to his home along 4th Street in Brilliant.
Before they arrived, Bell jumped out with a Great Dane puppy and fled. Police say the woman then called Eddy, who claimed she had never met Bell, and from there Eddy pretended to search the area with the woman.
“She set this up, and when her boyfriend stole the dog, this girl gets in the car,” Capt. Sean Norman of the Wells Township Police said. “And is riding around looking for the guy claiming she didn't know who he is."
The next day, police received a call that someone had broken into the quadriplex.
When they arrived, they found Bell in the basement working to allegedly steal copper.
Soon after his arrest, he was identified by the woman selling the puppy. And investigators put the whole puzzle together.
Bell is charged with burglary theft and criminal damaging.
Eddy is charged with recovering stolen property complicity to burglary and complicity to criminal damaging.
The pair is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
The puppy was returned to its owner and it is safe.
