JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio A public hearing for Community Development Block Grant funding was held Thursday at the Jefferson County Commissioners Office with three communities in particular expressing interest in using the money for improvement projects.
Steubenville Township, Tiltonsville and Bergholz have each shown an interest in various improvement projects that meet the requirements, particularly for repaving.
Farmers Lane and Emery Avenue were two of the locations officials expressed interest.
All villages and townships are represented at our meetings and throughout the course of consensus building and understanding, we talk about different projects and the need in the different areas, said Domenick Mucci, regional planning director.
The county is eligible for $164,000 in funding, a number significantly down from the average of $250,000 it has received in the past.
However, in lieu of that, they also now have these set aside grants, which we're eligible for that funding with the proper applications, Mucci said.
Residents also expressed an interest in securing money for Mingo Junction. The city's downtown area is in one of those limited median income areas.
Repaving is already expected for the access road leaving Mingo Junction from Commercial Avenue, but further improvements could be made to revitalize the area.
One of the great things about regional planning is when you have everyone around the table and everyone understands what the needs are and other needs, through collaboration and cooperation, that lends to a success, Mucci said.
The Regional Planning Commission has a second public hearing that is tentatively scheduled for May 22 or 29.
