JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- Steubenville's most controversial roadway is getting a bit of an overhaul.
Starting Wednesday, a portion of Lovers Lane will be closed while crews work to fix several glaring issues.
News9’s Ryan Eldredge has been reporting along Lovers Lane a lot the past few weeks previewing an intersection project. Even though this work will happen in the same area, it is not the same project.
This project concerns the surface of Lovers Lane, a road that has had its fair share of problems from potholes, to drainage, to road openings and everything in between.
Of course, once it is fixed, drivers will have some nice smooth new asphalt to coast on. But they'll have endure some construction headaches first.
Starting Wednesday, officials say Lovers Lane will be closed between Sunset Boulevard and Mall drive between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., lasting until Saturday at the earliest.
Residents will have limited access, but if you need to get by for any reason, you'll be asked to use John Scott highway or Sinclair Avenue as a detour.
And even though this work will fix the surface, it will only do so for another 3 to 4 years.
"It's going to eliminate the existing conditions that happen right now and greatly improve the ride ability of the roadway,” City Manager Mike Dolak said. “Nonetheless, the roadway was built back in the late 1920s early 30s, and it needs a full reconstruction because it really lacks drainage."
Dolak says the price tag is about $136,000. That money is coming from the city's income tax revenue.
