Six new firefighters selected in Steubenville

Updated: Tuesday, July 8 2014, 06:29 PM EDT
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – A few months ago, Steubenville received some good news when it learned it would be getting $1.2 million to increase its number of firefighters.
After a lengthy hiring process, Fire Chief Carlo Capaldi has selected his top six. They're just days away from being sworn in, but they'll have to go through some extensive training.
"Four out of the six already have certifications,” Capaldi said. “Six out of six have some type of certification and some have EMS training, so through the process we have individuals that pretty much can get brought up to speed pretty quickly."
The new firefighters will start training, which could take a month to complete, in August. Once up to speed, they will be moved around, boosting each turn from 11 crew members to 13.
“Just one firefighter per truck greatly increases the ability of that truck to perform more duties," Capaldi said.
Despite the additions, there is no guarantee that the Pleasant Heights fire station will reopen.
"It's not something we're talking about now because we don't have the staffing yet," Capaldi said.
"It could be an asset to our department -- plans for the long term -- but in the short term it, could be an asset."
The new firefighters will be sworn in on July 29.
Capaldi says he hopes to have the men in uniform ready to work by the end of August.
