Teen returns home from hospital

Updated: Thursday, April 3 2014, 07:47 AM EDT

TORONTO, Ohio --

A homecoming queen’s senior year was cut short after she came down with a rare disease in December but this week she was able to finally go home to be with her family.

Hannah Leasure, a Toronto High School senior, was a healthy teen who was hospitalized on Christmas Eve after developing anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, a rare condition that affects the brain.

After three months of battling the illness, Hannah was finally able to go home to her family on Wednesday and the Leasure family decided to have Christmas in April for Hannah’s homecoming.

“That we are home for good now and just have everybody back together and spend time with our friends and family and just have Hannah back home,” Hannah’s mother Robin Leasure said.

Hannah said she is happy to be home “because me and my family get to spend a lot of time together and it’s nice to be home from the hospital.”

The Leasure family has been amazed with all of the support they have received from the community.

“Just the whole community of Toronto, even surrounding communities have supported us so much and that’s how we got through this,” Robin Leasure said.

“I got a lot of cards and everyone at the Children’s Institute was really nice and I appreciate everything that they’ve done for me,” Hannah said.

Robin Leasure said the neurologist at the hospital was amazed with Hannah’s progress.

“She wasn’t able to walk, she wasn’t even able to say a word or eat. She was just lying there and looking up to the ceiling was all she could do. So within that time, she has just had an amazing recovery,” Robin Leasure said.

Hannah’s parents said she still has some recovery ahead of her but she continues to improve each day.

They are happy because Hannah will be able to go to prom this month and she will also be able to walk at graduation, and on April 13, she will compete in Ohio’s homecoming pageant.
