JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio – Thieves are targeting local camp grounds, and investigators believe they may be using chop shops to fence the goods.
Saline Township Police Chief Cliff Utt is growing tired of seeing other people's property stolen, including high-dollar items like ATVs and dirt bikes, at the Yellow Creek camp grounds.
On Sunday between 4-7 a.m., three dirt bikes and two four wheelers were stolen.
Police said a thief walked onto somebody else's space at the camp ground and took the items.
“Right now we're working with a couple of other local departments about some information that we got and at this time it's still under investigation,” Utt said.
What police do know is the description for some of the stolen property -- a 2004 white and black Suzuki LTZ400 sport quad with two black stickers on the tank and a 2005 red Honda CRF250R with red and white grips
“We've had stolen four wheelers and dirt bikes taken out of the camp ground and also over in the rider area that they use over there in the past,” Utt said.
Police believe some of these thieves may be selling the items to chop shops for cash.
“There's been a lot of thefts lately coming out of there and over the years it’s been a lot of thefts out of the camp grounds and other areas over there,” Utt said.
