WELLS TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Three alleged burglars are in the Jefferson County Jail after a next-door neighbor happened to look out her window and saw a burglary in action Thursday night.
She knew no one was home at the time and called police. The suspects fled the scene, were spotted by the responding officers, and led them on a chase before being captured.
"The officer responded and came across the subject vehicle as it was fleeing the scene," Wells Township Police Captain Sean Norman said. "The officers turned around and ended up into a pursuit on Route 7, where they were able to make them stop in Tiltonsville on Farm Lane."
Officers arrested Catherine Castellino, Shannon Holbrook, and Paul Roe on Thursday night.
The township has been dealing with a string of burglaries with three homes having recently been broken into. Officers think there might be a connection involving these suspects.
Two flat screen TVs were recovered along with items that led Norman to believe these burglaries are happening for one reason.
"It's drugs," Norman said. "In this situation, we had a hypodermic needle located on one of the suspects. It's not hard to lean to that. That's where it's coming from. In previous burglaries we had a lot of gold, a lot of jewelry stolen. Gold is easy to unload and get rid of and it's very difficult for us to trace."
Norman says there are some precautions you can take when you leave your home.
"We have what can only be described as a heroin epidemic in Jefferson County," he said. "It's affecting a lot of people but there's many things you can do to keep your homes at least somewhat secure. Keep them locked, keep the lights on inside, make it appear as if someone's home."
Officers are waiting for the pending prosecutor review to see what charges are being filed.
That could include burglary, theft, and others related to the chase.
