JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio -- The Urban Mission in Steubenville is nearing the halfway mark for an annual program to help bolster money and food donations.
Its called the Feinstein Hunger Challenge and its not an all year-type deal. Its two months -- March and April -- where a national organization matches the donations coming into the Urban Mission.
Its an opportunity organizers don't take lightly so they're hoping donations continue to roll in, especially with April right around the corner.
Last May, just a handful of the hundreds served by the Urban Mission flooded in to pick up food.
Then in November, food bags were stuffed to help feed families in need for Thanksgiving.
Those are a pair of examples of why the challenge is so critical.
Were really counting on these next two months to get us through, said Ashley Steele of the Urban Mission. To provide for the needs going into the summer and early fall.
In the past, a $1 donation meant $4 worth of food. For the first time, every dollar raised can now be used to purchase $11 worth of canned goods and other items.
Mid-Ohio Food Bank has done a great job working with a lot of producers, and even local stores, to be able to purchase food on their end that we can then purchase as well, Steele said.
The opportunity to stretch a dollar even further is a great thing. Steele said there are 1,800 signed up for food assistance each month.
The needs are met, but it's always a daily challenge and one we're ready to stand up for, she said.
To find out more about how you can help with the Feinstein Hunger Challenge and the Campaign for Good, you can contact the Urban Mission directly.
If you want your donations to be matched, they must be postmarked by April 30 and received by May 5 to be eligible.
