WEIRTON, W.Va. -- -Parents in Weirton are outraged after they found out their kids in daycare will not have transportation this school year.
Heller Park Daycare’s Matt Keenan says it began when he read a letter informing parents that there will no longer be bus transportation for before- and after-school centers.
Heller Park Daycare used to rely on Weirton transit, but since Hancock County School start times have changed, transit officials say they are unable to provide transportation because they have contracts with other schools that start at the same time.
"My concern is the fact that we have 19 children here at the daycare center in Weirton that no longer have transportation," concerned parent Tim Taylor said.
"We don't know what we're going to do,” Keenan sad. “I'm fighting for my kids right now."
He took his concerns to Hancock County Schools Superintendent Sue Smith in hopes she could help.
“After I found out that they would not provide transportation, I contacted her and stated our concerns, and she said they would look into it," he said.
While the superintendent looked into it, Keenan said there was not much resolution because Heller Daycare is in Brooke County. Smith says the school district does not provide transportation in Brooke County, but she says she will drop the kids off at the bottom of Cove Road. After that they will need to find transportation of their own.
"If I had that much means of transportation, I would just provide it myself,” Keenan said. “And there's no way I can transport that many children."
Weirton transit officials said they are working hard to find transportation for the daycare center.
