JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio - It was an emotional morning in a Jefferson County courtroom at a bond hearing for a man who faces life in prison if convicted on a murder charge.
Among the proceedings was a tear-filled outburst by the mother of 22-year-old victim Chad Taravella as Stephen Threats, the suspect in last week's fatal shooting in Wintersville went before a judge for the first time.
"I hope you rot in hell for murdering my baby," the victim's mother yelled from the back of the room.
At the front of the courtroom, Judge Joseph Cabi read the charges against the suspect 26-year-old Threats.
"An unclassified felony...tampering with evidence, which is a felony of the third degree," the judge said.
Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin laid out the serious charges in the case.
"He would face the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of parole for at least 15 years," Hanlin said.
Hanlin added that because threats has limited connections to Ohio, she requested a substantial bond.
"He's from the state of (Pennsylvania) and has at least one felony connection in that state," she said. "Due to the severity of the charges, the very real possibly of him spending his life in prison, we ask that bond be set at $1 million your honor."
That request was granted as authorities and the family continue to search for answers as to what sparked the firing of multiple shots at the Ridgewood apartments in Wintersville early last week.
Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said there is a still a lot of leg work to be done in this case, and they are continuing to conduct interviews to determine what exactly led up to this crime.
In the meantime, Threats will be back in a courtroom Tuesday afternoon in Toronto for his preliminary hearing.
