Concealed weapons permits on the rise in Brooke County

Updated: Monday, August 18 2014, 06:45 PM EDT

BROOKE COUNTY, W.Va. -- Concealed weapons permits are drastically increasing in West Virginia.
In Brooke County alone, the numbers have skyrocketed.
"We've seen about probably the amount of applications pretty much double," Brooke County Sheriff Chuck Jackson said.
To that end, signs are posted everywhere outside of the Brooke County Sheriff's Office, reminding people about gun permit hours. The hours had to be changed because so many people were at the Sheriff's Office's door, eager to get their gun permit.
But it's not exactly clear why more people are applying for these kinds of permits.
"The biggest single thing to have caused that has been recent attempts in legislation to control the sale of guns," Jackson said. "Ammunition is very difficult to get anymore, even as law enforcement officials, we have trouble getting ammunition in bulk."
In West Virginia alone, the number of concealed weapons permits issued annually in the state has more than quadrupled in the past five years.
While Brooke County is seeing a spike, Jackson says the numbers have recently slowed down.
Jackson also said he believes school shootings might be one of many reasons why more people are applying for gun permits.
