HARRISON COUNTY, Ohio - Eighteen months ago, what is now a massive production facility on the edge of Scio was nothing but corn fields. Now, it's become a hub for the oil and gas boom -- the Utica East Ohio's Harrison Hub.
Congressman Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, paid a visit to the Utica Shale production facility in Scio on Wednesday, joined by Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana.
It was one of their stops on an energy tour of Ohio.
"Because of the oil and gas development in the Utica and Marcellous Shale, since 2011 we've seen oil and gas production here in Ohio practically double," Johnson said. "We've got about 1,000 wells in Ohio, 500 are producing. And folks what does that mean? That means jobs."
Both Johnson and Scalise say plants like this not only create jobs, but help the country move closer to energy independence.
"You're seeing the ability to get those products that are brought out of the ground and get them to the rest of the markets throughout the rest of the country, which increases the ability to do more, to create more jobs, and to have more energy production in this part of the country," Scalise said.
The Scio facility, combined with two others around the region, make up one of the largest operations in the land.
"We processes approximately 40,000 barrels of liquids a day, we fractionate the liquids into ethane, propane, butane, and natural gasoline," President and CEO of Momentum Energy Frank Tsuru said.
Tsuru pointed out that requires manpower, and of his 115 employees, 70 percent are from Ohio.
