Dangerous road concern for neighbors

Updated: Friday, July 11 2014, 05:26 PM EDT

WHEELING, W.Va.--

A road on the Ohio-Marshall county line is a cause for concern for some neighbors in Wheeling.

The portion of Cedar Rock Road is caving in and now a road closed sign has been put up.

Kevin Graham who lives in the neighborhood that connects to the road said it's been in bad condition for years and now it's getting worse.

"You get a lot of vehicles stuck on it, our cars drag on it and it's a nasty turn," said Graham.

Harold Blust also lives near the turn and said he has sometimes taken the detour, but sometimes takes a chance on the slipping road.

"It's been a little bit of a hazard, but we like to use that road because we save more than a mile getting from here to the Elm Grove area versus the busy Stone Church Road," said Blust.

According to the West Virginia Department of Transportation, the road is now closed because they have had reports of damaged vehicles.

The DOT said that the soil significantly moved in the area causing a slip at the 180-degree turn and that drivers are supposed to take a detour.

Graham said he hopes the road is fixed soon because it's convenient.

"It's just longer the other way and you have a lot of truck traffic," said Graham.

DOT representatives said emergency responders are aware of the issue and have adjusted their route in case of any emergencies.

Road work is scheduled to begin in the fall.
