NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. -- A downburst with wind speeds nearing 75 mph caused significant damage in New Martinsville Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service the downburst began in Monroe County and made its way across the river to Wetzel County.
Trees were uprooted, gravestones toppled over, windows broken, and at least one home and business suffered extensive damage.
Larry Taylor, of New Martinsville, had just left work when the storm came through. The winds severely damaged his place of employment at Valley Towing and Auto Repair W.Va. 2.
"It's our livelihood and it was disturbing to see after the storm, but the good Lord was watching out for us," said Taylor.
Roger Billiter is the owner/operator of Valley Towing and said it caused massive destruction the business.
"The roof is torn off, vehicles destroyed and walls are torn down," Billiter said. "We are going to try to continue to operate in some capacity."
A trailer, just up the road from the tow truck business, was also destroyed. Landscapers and insurance agents could be seen across the New Martinsville area assessing damage.
