Fire investigation takes a turn, as victim passes

Updated: Tuesday, June 24 2014, 10:52 PM EDT

Steubenville, OH --

NEWS9 has learned that a woman who was removed from a burning home in Steubenville on Sunday morning did not survive her injuries.

This information was confirmed on Tuesday by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office. That same office says that the woman was 29-year-old Townya Metheny of Weirton, WV.

Officials say she passed away on Monday afternoon at a Pittsburgh hospital and they have determined that anoxic brain injury is to blame. An injury that was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Now that officials have determined that cause of death they must determine the cause of the fire.

"Our investigators say it's an undetermined cause and it's still under investigation because they want to look into everything and make sure the investigation is complete,” said Public Information Officer for the State Fire Marshal, Lindsey Burnworth. “Investigators say all accidental forms of ignition cannot be eliminated as to the cause of that fire."

Investigators from the Steubenville Fire Department have also played a role in this investigation. Officials say we should learn more about this case in the coming weeks.
