BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- A 28-year-old Bridgeport man was handed a 16-year prison sentence Friday morning inside a Belmont County courthouse, punishment for killing his then-girlfriend's 2-year-old child.
As presiding judge John Solovan II said in part, "This was no accident. This death was an unlawful, felonious act even if the subsequent death of a child was not intentional."
The tender life of Carter Caprita was taken Oct. 1, 2013 at the hands of a then 27-year-old Ian Jarrell.
Jarrell previously pleaded guilty to amended charges of felony child endangerment and involuntary manslaughter. The coroner’s report indicted the cause of death was suffocation.
Investigators said the child was in Jarrell's care at the time. He was the boyfriend of the toddler's mother.
“In your presentence investigation you admitted causing the death of the child by placing your hands over the child’s mouth,” Solovan said.
Solovan then described Jarrell's lengthy criminal patterns, both in his juvenile and adult life.
Jarrell stayed mum when given an opportunity to speak before sentencing, and remained solemn during the proceedings.
Solovan then handed down a lengthy prison sentence with a minimum of 5 years of post-release control.
“The court finds that consecutive sentences to the penitentiary are necessary to protect the public from future crimes," Solovan said.
"Other people may forget but we'll never forget," said Elizabeth Caprita, the victim's grandmother who spoke out following the hearing amid devastation, reliving the last weeks before Carter’s death.
“Somebody even sent a picture to me with his little jaw broke, and it was 2 weeks before he died. So I know he endured torture."
"The conditions that the child was subject to prior to his killing showed a pattern of neglect physical abuse for some time,” Bellaire Police Chief Mike Kovalyk said. "It's just unfortunate that those conditions were not recognized soon enough.”
Jarrell has two young children of his own, 7 and 9 years old.
On Friday, he was remanded into custody of the sheriff's office, awaiting transportation to the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, where he'll be taken to a permanent prison location to serve his sentence.
"Everybody that worked on this case and contributed to this case will not forget Carter Caprita," Kovalyk said. “That senseless killing of a 2-year-old, he'll have to live with for the rest of his life."
Solovan told Jarrell, "You're beginning to express remorse, but your accountability for this act has only begun."
