Largest meth bust in Belmont County under investigation

Updated: Monday, July 14 2014, 06:17 PM EDT

Belmont County officials discovered 71 separate meth labs inside a vacant home along High Ridge Road just outside Bellaire.

It started around 10:30 Sunday night when police responded to a call about a door being open at a vacant home.

Cmdr. of the Belmont County Drug Task Force John McFarland said police found what they believed to be a meth lab and it ended up being the largest meth lab operation the Belmont County Drug Task Force has ever dealt with.

“I know that we have a really serious drug problem here in the area. There are probably two, three times a week that we’re finding one-pot meth labs but to find this caliber…,” McFarland said.

The Belmont County Drug Task Force called in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation for assistance but they said the operation was too large so a private firm came to dispose of all the hazardous material discovered.

“You have neighbors, you have EMS personnel, fire department people, garbage men, you know, people throw this stuff in a garbage can and if the right combination of stuff is there, then kaboom, then it’s going to hurt everyone,” McFarland said.

No arrests have been made but officials do have a suspect in mind.

“I’m confident that one, if not many will be charged with this,” McFarland said.

Officials were on scene until 8:30 Monday morning.

The investigation is still ongoing.
