Local municipalities hope for more control over cities

Updated: Monday, August 11 2014, 06:40 PM EDT

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va.--

City leaders from Moundsville, Weirton, Parkersburg and Vienna were in Wheeling Monday to present their plans if granted the Home Rule status.

Twenty-three West Virginia cities are vying for 16 available spots to be part of the Home Rule Pilot Project.

Wheeling, Charleston, Huntington and Bridgeport are already abiding by the home rule option.

The Home Rule Option would grant leaders better control over their city.

The West Virginia Legislature has opened up to 20 cities which can be part of the program and application presentations began in July.

Buckhannon, Clarksburg, Shinnston, Fairmont and Morgantown will make their presentations in Bridgeport, West Virginia on Aug. 25.

Charles Town, Ranson, Martinsburg, Bath and Berkeley Springs will go to Martinsburg, before the board, Sept. 8.
