Local veterans are speaking out about a national scandal that has many people questioning the Obama Administration.
It's a scandal can be summed up in one word -- neglect.
Whether that neglect is factual or not isn't clear. What is very clear are the allegations surrounding Veterans Affairs hospitals, and local veterans said these problems are nothing new.
Vietnam veteran Jim Lee recalls the time he was ignored by hospital staff during a routine doctor's appointment at the VA hospital in Pittsburgh.
"I just walked out," Lee said. "I was so frustrated, I just walked out and I never went back. I never wanted their services."
Instead of waiting an hour for a routine checkup, he waited several hours.
That incident happened not too long after he returned home from the war.
Lee says he'd rather drive 2 hours out of his way to get treatment at a VA facility in Clarksburg, W.Va., than go to the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh, only to be ignored.
"The VA is accomplishing what the enemy never could; they're killing our troops, and I think it disgraceful," he said.
Lee lost the hearing in his right ear while he was in Vietnam. He said it's minor compared to the veterans who were exposed to Legionnaires Disease at the VA hospital in Pittsburgh.
While it may be on the Obama Administration's watch now, Lee said the problems go much further.
"It's not just under President Obama," he said. "It was under President Bush. Remember the one hospital was so horrible, the ceiling was caving in on the troops that were in the hospital. So this has been going on a long time no one seems to care, and I think our troops who serve this country well deserve better treatment."
While it's unclear when President Obama will address the allegations surrounding VA Hospitals Scandal.
