POWHATAN POINT, Ohio -- What started as a routine patrol got interesting when Powhatan Point Patrolman Chase Maffe made a stop at the village’s marina on Saturday night.
Maffe says he was there because a man who appeared intoxicated was trying to load his boat. When he arrived, he didn't get the greeting he expected, as the man made a stunning move. He started the boat and then tried to floor it.
"He full throttled it and started going away,” Maffe said. “However, because the boat was still tied, which he didn’t know, it had rear-ended up a little bit, then turned around and crashed into the dock. Then it went back out and crashed into the dock again. I was swaying around on the dock, and I thought I was going to fall in."
Maffe says he tased the man, identified as Jeffery Anderson, but it did little to stop his attempts to get away. Eventually the boat shut off and there was a 5-minute standoff.
"I instructed him several times to lay down on his stomach because I was going to pull the boat into shore as I was going to apprehend him ,” Maffe said. “However, he wouldn't listen. He was stumbling around, tried to get on to his stern, fell down head first, hit his head, suffered a concussion."
Anderson was charged with felony obstructing, resisting arrest, reckless operation of a vessel, and failure to comply with the order of a police officer among others.
While he awaits his date in court, members of the Powhatan Police Department who have reviewed the case say Maffe did everything by the book and was lucky to get away without any injuries.
"People sometimes freeze up or they second guess themselves,” Chief Jason West said. “Officer Maffe did everything that he was trained to do and we're really proud of him."
Anderson has bonded out of jail. He will eventually have to face a judge. When that day comes we will be sure to pass along the information to you.
