JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio --

One of the two men involved in Friday’s police chase along Route 213 in Jefferson County found himself in court on Tuesday for arraignment.

Michael Maurer faces two misdemeanor charges for his role in the chase -- one count of improper handling of a fire arm and one count of obstructing official business. He pleaded not guilty to both.

The other man, the driver of the car, took his own life.

After Tuesday’s hearing, Maurer was released on bond, but under one stipulation – that Maurer undergo a drug and alcohol assessment.

The actions of both men are described as out of character by family and friends. Officials said the investigation may never reveal one answer.

"I don't know that we'll ever really know the reason why he did this," said Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin. “In terms of the death of Mr. Boone (the driver), there is not much more that can be done other than offer our sympathy to his family and friends."

Maurer will be back in court for his pre-trail, however that hearing has yet to be scheduled.
