As area steel mills faltered, in some cases the rail industry was stopped dead in its tracks.
But that trend is making a turnaround -- and a fast one at that.
Workers at Utica East Ohio load cars daily with natural gas, butane, propane, all products from the plant. The facility in Harrison County is only 2 years old. The new business it brings called for new rail lines.
That's where Genesee and Wyoming came in. The common carrier railroad was happy to help with the now-booming business.
In the 70s some of their lines were ready to be picked up. In fact, parts of the line were up for abandonment until the company acquired it just a few years ago.
"Within the last couple of years, we've been adding track, infrastructure back to the rail system where ... our main rail line used to be double track from Pittsburgh to Columbus and was reduced to single," said John Murray, assistant vice president of sales and marketing for Ohio Central Railway, a division of Genesee and Wyoming. "We've been adding back a second track in locations."
They're adding 6,000 feet to a second track to support UEO at the west end of the plant.
Part of the reason is a consistency only rail cars can bring.
"Rail gives a company an immediate ability to move product to market," Murray said. "The infrastructure is in place, and the start-up cost  ... to build a track is not terribly expensive."
And, Murray said, railroads provide service to markets other modes can't access as easily.
"If you look at the pipeline network throughout the country, it doesn't touch nearly as many points as a railroad does," Murray said. "Railroads have been around for a century and a half, and there's almost no part of the country that railroads don't reach right now."
It's true. Other industries like agriculture, glass and lumber have kept rail cars moving during the years.
But.
"There hasn't been the same level of growth," Murray said. "Some have suffered decline, and oil and gas has moved at a very rapid rate."
It's a surging business bringing jobs with it.
