With suspect William McBride, Jr., in custody, police are releasing new details of how they tracked him down after last weekend's armed bank robberies in Belmont and Ohio counties.
The first armed robbery took place at the WesBanco on Wheeling Island on Saturday morning. Then, less than an hour later, the WesBanco at the St. Clairsville plaza was also robbed in what authorities quickly determined was a connected case.
Authorities at the Belmont County Sheriff's Office say the armed bank robber was identified through surveillance, excellent witness descriptions, and his license plate.
As it turns out, McBride, of Columbus, has a prior criminal history.
"He had a prior history of bank robbery on his criminal history when they ran it,” Belmont Count Chief Deputy James Zusack said. “So that was a very big key for him being the suspect."
And authorities say McBride was on parole for another bank robbery at an unknown bank when he allegedly committed the crimes last weekend.
