HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. - Hancock County officials voted 5-0 in favor of banning smoking in Hancock County on Tuesday afternoon.
It was a decision that, as expected, left many business owners upset.
Bar owner, Carol Coburn was noticeably bothered and said the decision to ban smoking in the county will affect not only her business but many others in the area.
"There are certain clients that come to our businesses," Coburns said. "And when it comes to a bar, there is smoking and drinking - that's the way it is. And when you talk about a casino, there is smoking and drinking. It's our livelihood."
Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort General Manager Chris Kurn says his business will take an economic hit.
"We are upset they decided to pass that ban,” he said. “We were hoping they would be open and willing to pass a compromise that we offered them the last few months. Unfortunately we never heard back from the board; they obviously had their mind made up to pass this total ban."
There are plenty of people who are in favor of the smoking ban too, but even though the board of health has made its decision, you can bet the conversation about it is far from over.
The ban will take effect July 1, 2015.
