BROOKE COUNTY, Ohio -- The annual Summer Reading Program in Wellsburg ended, with organizers calling it a success. Nearly 75 kids showed up for at the Brooke County Library for the program, which is held in July.
Now that it's over, library officials are working on offering more programs to keep kids reading during the school year.
The Summer Reading Program has been a part of the Library since 1951. It helps promote reading during the summer while kids are out of school.
“We're very excited,” Director of Educational Programs Kim Harless said. “This year the theme was ‘Fiz, Boom, Read,’ which was a science theme. So all summer I've been doing science experiments and stuff like that with kids, trying to get them more excited about reading."
That theme must have worked. Nearly 1,000 books were checked out of the library during the program, which includes pre-school kids through 8th graders.
"It's nice to keep them learning through the summer, to keep their reading skills up," Harless said.
Moving forward, the library will offer a variety of reading programs for kids throughout the school year.
