Local Pharmacy Creates New Way to Support Local Organizations

Moundsville Pharmacy announces the launch of the CommunityRx Program – a “pay it forward” pharmacy program designed to increase community awareness of the mission of local non-profit organizations and the impact of locally-owned businesses on the community.

Moundsville Pharmacy, a locally-owned pharmacy in Moundsville, WV, developed this program to build awareness of how individuals can greatly impact the community just by supporting the businesses that actively support their community.  “Sometimes it’s just a matter of where you shop,” says Jason Turner, pharmacist and owner of Moundsville Pharmacy.

Studies show that for every $100 spent in a locally-owned independent store, $68 returns to the community through payroll, taxes, community support, and other expenditures.  However, in a national chain, it is estimated that only $43 stays in the community.  And if patients purchase through mail order, there are minimal returns to the community.

Moundsville Pharmacy and other locally-owned businesses are vital to the financial health of community groups and non-profit organizations.  Locally-owned businesses are often among the first to support these organizations – including youth groups, local athletic boosters, high school yearbooks, academic groups, marching bands, community missions, theatre groups, 4-H projects, scholarships, community events, and animal shelters, among many others.

“Businesses depend on the support of the members of these organizations and the community in order to continue to be able to ‘pay it forward’ to these organizations.”

CommunityRx was designed so that each month Moundsville Pharmacy will partner with a non-profit organization to provide a unique opportunity for the community to support the selected organization.  Turner explains, “Our goal for the CommunityRx program is to be able to make a meaningful donation to a different organization every month.”

For the month of September, Moundsville Pharmacy is partnering with the Marshall County Animal Shelter.  Cindy Brautigan, Director of the Animal Shelter explains, “The Marshall County Animal Shelter rescues and places hundreds of homeless pets each year, but depends greatly on donations from members of the community and businesses.”

Making an impact is simple – for each new paitent mentioning the CommunityRx program, Moundsville Pharmacy will donate $5 for every prescription.  Turner explains, “If a new patient transfers 5 prescriptions to Moundville Pharmacy, we will make a donation of $25.00 to the organization.”  In addition, as an opportunity for existing Moundsville Pharmacy patients, “We will be accepting donations from existing patients at the pharmacy and will match donations from the community up to $250 monthly.”

Turner comments, “We want both the community and the organization to realize an immediate reward for their support of a locally-owned business.  We want patients to know that every prescription does make a difference to the community.”

Moundsville Pharmacy is located at 115 Lafayette Ave in Moundsville and is open Monday thru Friday from 9 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm.  If you have questions or would like to learn more about the CommunityRx Program, call (304) 845-0390.
