MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va.—

Helping Heroes opened in Moundsville in October. The group serves veterans in the Ohio Valley.

It was founded by Jeremy and Susan Harrison. Jeremy Harrison was a soldier himself and says many veterans are struggling.

“There’s an issue specifically with veterans coming home specifically from Iraq and Afghanistan and they have a hard time finding work— we want to help them,” said Harrison.

He says not finding work can get depressing. He also says many of these veterans find themselves unemployed and homeless.

“They come from a proud background serving their country and doing something significant and when they come home they can't find work it creates symptoms like depression for these veterans,” said Harrison.

Helping Heroes offers housing assistance-- and with the help of volunteers-- they're building apartments upstairs from their location on Jefferson Avenue in Moundsville.

“We provide intensive case management and financial assistance if they meet our criteria,” said Harrison.

The group is planning a fundraiser in May at Wesbanco Arena. The event is scheduled from 5-9 p.m. May 25. It will include speakers, dinner and entertainment. The proceeds will be used to help local veterans.

If you’d like to help with the fundraiser or the organization you can contact them at 304-810-4291.
