Man's 1999 stabbing trial delayed by new evidence

Updated: Thursday, August 29 2013, 03:53 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH (AP) –

The trial of a Marshall County man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-wife in 1999 in her suburban Pittsburgh home has been delayed until November after prosecutors found newly discovered evidence -- including an FBI profiler's report suggesting someone else committed the crime -- in local police files.

Allegheny County Deputy District Attorney Lisa Pellegrini told a judge Thursday she found the documents in a Bethel Park, Pa., police file into the death of 29-year-old Melissa Groot.

John Minch, 45, of Cameron, was arrested in April 2009, but only after police say a hair found at the crime could match his DNA.

The hair had been in storage for years before it was tested, and Minch argues that while it could match him, tests also show it could match millions of other men.
