Ohio Valley Media Blood Donor Day Soon

WHEELING, W.Va.--

Media Blood Donor Day is less than two weeks away and WTOV9 has teamed up with the American Red Cross.

The event will be held Jan. 27 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Wheeling's Wesbanco Arena.

The event is one of the largest one-day blood drive events in the region. This year the American Red Cross has set a goal of 350 productive blood donors that is about 440 people donating.

Cheryl Gergely, communications manager with the American Red Cross, says currently blood donations are down because of the recent bad weather.

"Winter is typically a time when we see a decline in blood donations because it's cold, illness, there's bad weather and the roads are bad, so people tend to not come out and donate blood," said Gergely.

She encourages everyone to attempt to donate blood because even if you think you don't qualify you still may.

"Every two seconds someone needs blood," said Gergely. "Blood is needed by cancer patients, people with blood disorders, people having surgery, so there are a lot of reasons."

For more information you can head to redcrossblood.org. If you need transportation to the event you can call 304-232-1175.
