A man was rescued Tuesday after his vehicle was swept away by fast-moving waters.

The incident happened in Big Wheeling Creek near Stacey's Crossing Apartments, close to the Ohio County-Marshall County line.

Firefighters said the man thought he could drive his SUV across the creek, but the water was too deep and his vehicle was swept down the fast-moving water.

Emergency crews from Marshall and Ohio counties, including a swift-water rescue team, arrived quickly and rescued the driver.

When a NEWS9 crew was at the scene, the man was drying off, collecting his belongings and appeared to be OK. The vehicle was pulled from the creek and towed away around 4 p.m.

Firefighters said with the cold weather and fast-moving water, the situation could have been bad.

"He made it about two-thirds of the way across and got stuck in the water. (The) water was over the hood of the car," said Stone Church Volunteer Fire Department Chief Joe Hall.

The chief said he's not sure why the man thought he could make it across the creek or where he was heading.

The driver's name was not released and Hall said the man is doing fine.
