Update: Officials eye Feb. 28 as target date for sinkhole repair

Updated: Thursday, February 13 2014, 12:42 PM EST

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Highways has targeted Friday, Feb. 28, for the re-opening of the Jefferson Ave. Extension (US 250 north and south bound) in Moundsville, which was closed Wednesday after a large sinkhole was discovered.

The DOH says Savage Construction Company, a sub-contractor for the Moundsville Sanitary Board, will begin repairs and, contingent on weather, equipment, and materials, will be opened upon completion, which, it says, may be earlier than the target date.

In the meantime, there will be no through traffic.

Motorists are asked to use the following detours: U.S. 250 northbound traffic should use Grant Ave. to 2nd Street, Moundsville to Jefferson Ave, to any of several connecting Moundsville city streets (5th-12th streets) to W.Va. 2. All W.Va. 2 traffic southbound should remain on W.Va. 2 and use any of the connecting Moundsville city streets to Jefferson Ave., to Grant Ave., and back to 1st Street (U.S. 250 Southbound).
