MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. --

A woman has been charged with a hit-and-run that left a child seriously injured in Marshall County.

Melissa Milam, 45, of McMechen, is charged with misdemeanor counts of leaving the scene of accident with injury and failure to render aid and information. Police Chief Dave Robinson said Milam turned herself in.

A 10-year-old boy was riding his bike Sunday evening on 12th Street when police said Milam struck the child as she drove south on Marshall Street. The child continues to recover in a Pittsburgh hospital, Robinson said.

Milam was arraigned by Marshall County Magistrate David Buzzard and released on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond.

Neighbors in the area said they see many drivers who speed.

"They do drive fast through here all the time, you know, during the day and at night. I don't think they really pay attention to kids," Mary Violet said. "I think there needs to be more lighting because it's dark down this way."
