MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. --

Mine safety officials say a worker has died of a head injury at CONSOL Energy's McElroy mine in Marshall County.

The West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training said the accident happened just before 1 p.m. Friday.

How the victim was injured was not immediately clear. The miner died on the way to the hospital. In a statement from CONSOL, officials said "an employee at CONSOL Energy's McElroy Mine near Cameron, WV, sustained severe injuries resulting in a fatality."

Spokeswoman Leslie Fitzwater said an investigation is underway. She couldn't immediately offer more details.

In the statement, CONSOL officials said, "CONSOL Energy notified federal and state mining officials and is working closely with them to determine the cause of the incident."

Officials with the company said McElroy Mine operations have ceased temporarily and will resume on Saturday.

The statement read, "At this time, CONSOL has no further details; we will provide updated information as it becomes available."
