30 turn out for St. Baldrick's Day event

Updated: Saturday, March 15 2014, 07:43 PM EDT

WHEELING, Wheeling residents got together to have some fun and support a good cause at the 11th annual St. Baldrick's Day event, which raises money for childhood cancer research.

In total, more than 30 people got their heads shaved bald for donations.

“It’s just a thing that helps me to identify with all that cancer patients are going through and at the same time to help do good by helping to cure cancer through raising donations through research,” Lysbeth Miravalle, a nurse, said.

Coordinator Dave Parsons said St. Baldrick’s Foundation gives the second mostamount of money toward childhood cancer research and that the annual head-shaving event really helps raise donations.

"People are going to ask you why I’m bald, that’s why we give them the buttons that say, ‘ Ask me why I’m bald’ on them and hopefully people will ask them,” Parsons said. “We've had people raise a couple a couple hundred dollars after the fact - just going to the grocery store, just ask them why and they give to the cause."

Valeria Parsons first had her head shaved seven years ago for the cause and has done it every year since. Parsons said that childhood cancer needs its own research because it is so different from adult onset cancers.

"Most pharmaceutical drugs that are developed to treat cancer are in adult doses and the first thing a pediatrician asks you when you tell them your child sick is how old are they and what do they weigh,” Parsons said. “In some cases there’s no choice, you have to give the adult dose to a 3-year-old child. That just doesn't work well. It needs its own research, it needs its own funding, it needs its own treatments.

Parsons said the annual event continues to grow each year and they are always happy to see more people coming out to support the cause.
