$4 million in improvements planned for Wheeling's Wesbanco Arena including a new video board, new seats and handrails, concessions, new front entry, elevators and restrooms.

Wheeling city manager Robert Herron said they are working on ways to improve the building.

"We are looking at ways we can enhance the experience for the customers that come through for various event," said Herron. "This project will evolve as far as design and architectural services and we will have a clearer picture."

Herron said making the building more handicap accessible is a priority. He also said the leaky entry roof is set to be repaired and a new front entrance will be designed.

The improvements to the arena will be paid for with sales tax money.

"The citizens are starting to see the positive effects of the half percent sales tax and it will continue to enhance our ability to make improvements around the city," said Herron.

Meanwhile, city leaders say they are hoping to attract new entertainment while retaining the old.

"I feel comfortable that the Wheeling Nailers are here for the long haul," said Herron. They are our primary tenant and bring a lot of pride to the community," said Herron.

Herron said some of the improvements will begin in the fall, while others will have to happen after the 2014-2015 Nailer season.
