Big event held Tuesday night in Wheeling for National Night Out

WHEELING, W.Va.--

"National Night Out" event is being held Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Wheeling Park's rink, just off National Rd.


The event is to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

NATW's National Night Out program comes together annually nationwide on the first Tuesday of August.

The introduction of National Night Out, "America's Night Out Against Crime,", began in Texas in 1984.

National Night Out now involves over 37.8 million people and 16,124 communities from all 50 states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide.

The traditional "lights on" campaign and symbolic front porch vigils turned into a celebration across America with various.

The night celebrates safety and crime prevention successes and works to expand and strengthen programs for the next 364 days.

Wheeling Police Department, the Wheeling Fire Department, the Ohio County Sheriff's Department, and the American Red Cross will all be at Tuesday's event at the park.
