WHEELING, W.Va. -- A Wheeling man was found guilty of misdemeanor battery on Thursday afternoon in an Ohio County courtroom, the end result of a Nov. 2013 fight with his then-girlfriend that got out of hand.
Heyward Bazar is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. July 17. He faces up to a year in jail.
Prosecutor's argued that Bazar meant to hurt his then-girlfriend and punched her in the head. However, Bazar's attorney said it was a fight that escalated, and she hit her head on a door frame.
After just 11 minutes, a jury came back with the lesser charge verdict. Bazar was originally charged with felony malicious assault.
Police and neighbors testified about the night of Nov. 22, 2013. In court, it was revealed that the couple had been at the Fantasy of Lights Parade in Wheeling and were drinking alcohol. According to reports, the two then went back to their North Park apartment and got into a heated argument.
Evidence was presented of their apartment in disarray. Neighbors say the woman admitted Bazar beat her and pictures showing a bloody scene were displayed for the jury.
