Capitol Theatre preparing for busy season

Updated: Friday, August 29 2014, 06:39 PM EDT
OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. – The Capitol Theatre in downtown Wheeling is preparing for its busiest time of the year with a lineup that features a little something for everybody.
New shows are ready to crank up and officials are thrilled about the upcoming year. On the top of the list are a Tammy Wynette Tribute Show, Christian Comedian Tim Hawkins, the Doo-Woop shows, and of course, the Wheeling Symphony, which is getting ready to launch its new season in just a few short weeks.
“And then we'll be kicking into our Broadway series,” said Dennis R. Magruder, executive director of the theatre. “And of course, we have some pretty high-end shows -- Camelot, Million Dollar Quartet, Flash Dance, Beauty and the Beast. (It) should be really good."
As things move into the holiday season, the theater will play host to a variety of Christmas shows. The Honky Tonk Sweethearts, Kenny Rogers, and, of course, B.E. Taylor are just a few.
Meanwhile, officials at the theater say major projects are also just a few weeks shy of being completed.
"As you come into the building, you'll see that we're finishing up the Terracotta restoration project,” Magruder said. “It’s the original from 1928, and this is the first time it's been refurbished. Patching the cracks and cleaning and should be finished within the next 3-4 weeks."
Plus, they’re replacing all of the lights with new LEDs. At this time last year, they gutted the entire building. They took out old seats and replaced carpet, stage curtains, and wall coverings.
Magruder says they've received great feedback from customers, but renovations will really never be complete. They always have dreams to fulfill.
Five years ago, Magruder said they had a game plan in what they wanted to get done as far as renovations and improvements go. It’s an on-going process, but they are certainly on the right track and ready for the season.
