WHEELING, W.Va - Catholic Charities West Virginia in Wheeling is opening a hospitality house in the city as a way to further assist homeless families in the area.

Catholic Charities recognized the need for family emergency housing and is close to completing renovations on a home purchased for just that.

This is the first such home that Catholic Charities has purchased for this purpose and it's located next to the center. The home was in need of some repairs that were made to ensure the home's stability and safety. With just a few more things to be nailed down, the house is nearly complete and ready for a family in need to call it home.

The project is being called Hospitality Houseand emphasizes a family staying together during difficult times.

"This is actually the first one, but I can tell you right now that if I had 10 of them I could fill them," Catholic Charities Neighborhood Director P.J. Reindel said. "So we're really hoping that this starts sort of a groundswellin the area."

Catholic Charities secured a grant from the Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley to help complete the revovations.

"We did a new roof, we got all new windows in the house, new plumbing, all new electric throughout, really from head to toe outside of the general structure," Reindel said.

Families will have a safe and clean private residence for up to six months to establish the services and assistance steps they need to get back on their feet.

"This will be a place where families can stay up to six months, to shelter. They'll be here 24 hours a day, they don't have to leave, they can stay here," Reindel said. "We're located right next door,so we're very accessible if any needs arise we're going to be right there to help them along the way."

Reindel also said that if the opportunity presents itself, they are open to acquiring more properties for this specific use.

"Maybe we will be able to identify some other properties or have some people come forward with places to donate so that we can meet this critical need at this time," Reindel said.
