WHEELING, W.Va.--

Wheeling Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center hosted a food and toy giveaway on Monday.

Hundreds were provided with turkeys, ham, and sides for a Christmas dinner.

Louis Volpe, a volunteer at the center, said that the event is about togetherness and hope.

“I need them as much as they need me and that's something the center is trying to develop the sense that we're all in this together,” said Volpe.

P.J. Rendel, director at the center, said the event takes months to organize, but many wouldn’t be able to provide their family with Christmas dinner without it.

“I know that things aren't great for a lot of people in the Ohio Valley so we try to be here to help,” said Rendel. “We give them a sense of hope and offer friendship.”

Rendel added that many throughout the community helped to gather the items given out.

“We absolutely could not do it without the community and that goes for everything that we do here,” said Rendel.

Hundreds more will receive a box of goods Tuesday. People signed up for the food and toys ahead of time.
