Chili cook-off begins in Wheeling

Updated: Saturday, June 7 2014, 10:27 PM EDT

WHEELING. W.Va - Chili enthusiasts traveled as far as Kentucky to attend one of Wheelings biggest cook-offs today in the friendly city.

The city has held the cook-off event for 13 years now, and it's all for a good cause.

“We’ve raised about $80,000 in our past 12 years, this is going to be our lucky 13th, and we hope to take it over the top so we can benefit a lot of agencies in the area,” chili chairperson Rosemary Warmuth said.

The money raised goes to the Upper Ohio Valley United Way and organizers of the event thought of a unique way to raise it.

“It’s great to taste all the chili and have a good time,” Marion Ott said.

Organizers of the event say the chili cooks are world class cooks.

12 different restaurants throughout the area set up shop, along with 40 individual cooks and last year’s winner who traveled all the way from Kentucky hopes to reclaim their crown as champion.

“I love competitive cooking and I love the cause that we're cooking for and actually we could not do this without the support,” Warmuth said. “This is a City of Wheeling event and we could never do this without the support from the city. It's important for us as a city because it helps so many agencies in the area"
