OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. -- Too much alcohol and a text message from another woman are what Pernell Deck, 52, said caused a fight that lead to the beating of a Wheeling woman.
Thursday, Deck admitted the crime in court and said he needs to change his life.
“You can say you’re sorry, but unless you change your life, none of this even matters,” he said.
Assistant Prosecutor Gail Kahle said on April 13, Deck and his long-time girlfriend got into a fight over a text message from another woman asking about marijuana. According to reports, the victim questioned Deck and he got angry. Deck said the two had been drinking all day at the victim’s Hildar apartment with another friend.
An argument ensued and the woman says the last thing she remembers is being punched in the face and waking up the next day. According to reports, the woman's children later forced her to go to police.
“They came back from out of town and found their mother, who had been subjected to trauma, and she appeared a severely beaten and her face was black and blue,” Kahle said.
Deck says his girlfriend hit him first, but in court admitted what he did was wrong.
“I grabbed her and threw her through a medal rack,” he said.
In court, it was revealed that Deck could have faced a penalty of life in prison because this is his third felony. Deck was previously convicted of sexual assault and a separate drug charge.
Deck was sentenced to 2-10 years in jail.
