Despite another bad ranking for W.Va., business owners see progress

Updated: Friday, June 27 2014, 06:37 PM EDT
WHEELING, W.Va. -- Another bad ranking for West Virginia is not sitting well with a lot of people.
CNBC released its annual business rankings this week and not much changed for the state, which was
ranked 48th best place for doing business …. for the second year in a row.
Some factors contributing to West Virginia's bottom-3 ranking: The state came in 49th for access to capital, 50th for business friendliness, and 48th for technology and innovation.
Owner of Smart Centre Market in Wheeling, Libby Strong, says it's unfortunate.
"West Virginia gets a bad (reputation) on a lot of things,” she said. “I think it’s time we start turning the tide and figure out why we're ranking so low on a lot of these various studies."
Owner of Casa Di Vino and Market Vines restaurant in Wheeling, Greg Myers, says he understands why the ranking is so low.
"But down here in center market, I think things are starting to make a change for,” Myers said. “And I think it has a lot to do with the community support and some of the local businesses."
Strong's business is also located in Centre Market and she says small businesses need the community's help to keep the local economy circulating.
"You’re actually helping your neighbors to stay in business, make a living and enhance the quality of life in the area," Strong said.
Myers believes there's been some progress for the Wheeling area, but he would like to see officials address areas the state is lacking in, particularly the high cost of doing business and taxes.
"I think the city needs to sit down and focus on, as well as the state, cutting taxes for businesses coming into the area and wanting to start and giving some tax breaks to make people want to start a business in West Virginia,” Myers said. “I think that’s one of the biggest things that holds people back.”
There is some good news for West Virginia that came from the report, the cost of living in West Virginia is among the lowest in the country, ranking No. 5.
