Hail damage leads to sale at local car dealership

Updated: Wednesday, June 4 2014, 06:43 PM EDT

BENWOOD, W.Va. -- You wouldn't expect an indoor car dealership to have to deal with hail damage to its cars.
But that's what happened at A&B Kia in Benwood, when hail up to the size of a quarter smashed onto 45 brand new cars that had been delivered prior to a May 14 storm.
Because of that, the dealership is having a "hail storm sale," discounting cars from $1,700 to $4,000 plus rebates and any incentives.
"We had three trucks delivered," A&B Kia General Manager Brad Munson said. "All the cars were sitting outside and we did sustain damage to a decent amount of cars."
He said the sale of those cars is going well.
"We started with 45; we still have some left," Munson said. "But it's been a great opportunity for us, as well as people in the valley, to get some cars that they might not have otherwise considered."
Hail can put dents on the exterior, shatter a windshield, or even put holes in a car.
Munson said he has heard about hail damaging cars at other dealerships around the country where thousands of cars were damaged.
"In our case, it was very slight," he said. "We were on one end of the spectrum where I've heard of other dealerships that sustained much more damage to the cars where they were not sellable."
Repairs can cost from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
