WHEELING, W.Va. – Wheeling Jesuit students will begin to move into the Cardinal Commons on Washington Avenue in about 3 weeks as an Aug. 23 completion date nears.
Before work began in February, neighbors contested the project, saying they were worried about who the realtors would rent to and what trouble could come.
Now, leaders at the Wheeling Jesuit say the apartments are an asset to the area and the project has had little, or no, problems.
“We have been working with the neighbors the best we can,” said Mike Schatzel of Bedway Development. “I would say traffic was the biggest issue is traffic, but we’re working with them as best we can.”
The project developer and owner of the complex is Double J Realty, but they plan to lease the entire building to Wheeling Jesuit University.
"This place is designed to be their home,” said Dr. Justin Tyler Owens, WJU’s director of residence life. “They can escape from standard academics and get away from undergrads. A space they can feel comfortable in."
The complex has 36 units -- half single and half doubles. Fifty-two students will live in it, and they tell say it’s already almost at capacity.
Owens says he will live in one of the units and manage the facility.
He says the building is designed for enough parking for residents and their guests, and he expects it to be a pleasant atmosphere.
“There was definitely a need,” Owens said. “At this point, we have adults and others that were residing in another residence hall that was not meeting their needs."
Completion is expected for Aug 23. School begins the following Monday.
