Ironworkers test their skills

Updated: Saturday, May 31 2014, 06:50 PM EDT

WHEELING, W.Va - 12 ironworkers apprentices from all over the region tested their skills Saturday at Wheeling's Local Ironworkers complex.

Two apprentices each from Canton, Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Cleveland, Toledo, and Wheeling completed welding, burning, and window installation exercises. They ended the day with the famous column climb.

The goal was to see which apprentice could climb a 35-foot column the fastest.

Three stop watches were used to time the climbs and participants had to ring the bell once they made it to the top.

“They use their hands and their feet. Up the ladder they go. It's exciting. A lot of people cheer and it's a good time,” Ironworkers Local 549 business manager Kevin Hughes said.

The winner of the column climb was from the Ironworkers Local 549 in Wheeling, Jeff Lilly, from Cameron.

“It’s been alright. A few things I could have done better, but it is what it is,” apprentice Randy Gaus said.
